Its that time of year… The rodents are coming!

Autumn is the time when rat and mice populations can start increasing on farms and in commercial properties as food supplies dry up in the field and cold wet weather starts to move in. Not only farms can become over run but your homes too and the longer the infestation is there, the harder it is to control.

Here are some simple steps and precautions that you can take to avoid any unwanted visitors and having to call in the professionals.

Step 1 – Remove access to food sources

Wherever possible we must prevent rodent access to food. If there are spillages, then they must be cleaned up straight away and disposed of so rodents cannot consume it. Keep compost heap turned and remove any bird feeders if there is a current infestation.

Step 2 – Remove excess debris

Areas that have been left overgrown and excess harbourage should be cleared or kept to a minimum around buildings. Doing this will open up the areas to natural predators.

Step 3 – Proofing

Rodents love to chew, if they can get their teeth into it, they will. Wire wool can be used to block small gaps in brick work and around external pipe inlets. Bristle strips can be installed to the bottom of doors closing off small gaps in and around your home.

Just one last thing – Think wildlife

Due to CRRU (Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use) regulations, be responsible with rodenticides you can buy from the shops, it is best to call a professional if in doubt.
