…that things can sound very different to how they appear? We frequently get call outs to giant rats thudding around in the loft that turn out to be delicate little song birds fluttering in the soffits. And sometimes the evidence left behind isn’t enough to give you the whole picture. A vital part of our job is identifying exactly which species is causing the problem you’ve reported to us, so that we can put together a suitable management plan.

One of the many innovations we offer is motion sensor camera equipment. Used in conjunction with good old-fashioned detective work, we employ the latest technology in day/night surveillance cameras. They can be positioned without disturbing the surroundings or influencing animal activity during the monitoring period. Our cameras produce colour images in daytime, and black/white images at night using infrared illumination. The range of the cameras is around 12 meters, which makes it ideal for monitoring areas where there might be activity. And the results can be really interesting! Not only can we see what appears, but also when, which can be helpful when tracking far-ranging species such as deer and foxes.

At home on the family farm, we thought that deer were ring-barking some young trees in our wildlife copses – before the incriminating evidence was captured (image above)!

Armed with the full picture, we could put together a strategy to protect our trees and exclude the pesky sheep from the area. Finding this out also taught us that, if the sheep are so desperate to forage that they are ripping down post and rail fencing, there is something else amiss – their diet must be deficient. So, with a mineral block for the sheep and a few new rails for the fence, the balance is restored, and our precious trees are safe.

As well as using motion sensor cameras to detect pest activity, this equipment plays an important role in safeguarding protected or endangered wildlife. We offer wildlife surveys to our customers who want to pinpoint habitat being used by species such as badgers to ensure their conservation. This is particularly important when considering carrying out building and landscaping works.
