We like to surprise our customers with new ideas and innovations – and our canine pest control partners always get a great reception! We have been using dogs to sniff out bedbug infestations in the same way that police sniffer-dogs are used to find drugs or explosives since 2016. Our scent detection dogs are now the fastest and most accurate way to find bedbugs, able to discover even a single bug in minutes. We also have dogs trained in pin pointing the deadly bacteria MRSA, invaluable in medical environments.

You can teach dogs to follow pretty much any scent. And all breeds of dog can be trained to track! Here is Vermtek’s Sika, in training to follow deer tracks. We chose to train her on this scent because the ability to track injured deer is vital for welfare management.

Sika is a 2-year-old Labrador Retriever with an exceptional nose! Sika’s incredible nose was first evident as a puppy, sniffing out tennis balls in the most obscure and hard to reach locations. Her training started on very short, straight trails and is all reward based. Like most Labradors, she has a very healthy appetite and infinite eagerness to please which makes her a joy to train.

Sika is working towards passing her “20-hour test”, where she must be able to follow long, winding tracks that are more than 20 hours old and cross with other interesting scents. This means she will be certified to assist the police with tracking deer that have been hurt in traffic collisions.
